Initial situation

Ulmer Maschinenteile GmbH, with around 130 employees, required a capable production planning solution to transparently and punctually control its variant-rich manufacturing of CNC precision parts, individual components and assemblies. The existing ams.erp environment was to be extended with a real-time capable fine planning solution without requiring extensive ERP customisation. Welded assemblies and complete assemblies in contract manufacturing demand precise coordination of capacities and delivery dates.

Challenge

The manufacturing of individual parts through to complete assemblies requires high planning accuracy. The goal was to optimally utilise capacities, shorten lead times and sustainably improve on-time delivery to customers. Without graphical fine planning, bottlenecks and scheduling risks were only identifiable with manual effort. Short-notice order changes and urgent orders could not be incorporated into planning quickly enough, leading to unnecessary setup and waiting times.

Solution

The solution deployed is 4APS for digital real-time production planning as the OEM solution ams.leitstand from the market leader for single-unit manufacturers, ams of Achim. The solution integrates seamlessly into the existing ams.erp environment and provides a transparent view of all manufacturing processes. The graphical scheduling board displays all orders, capacities and dates clearly; dispatchers can adjust sequences and identify bottlenecks at an early stage. Master and order data from ams.erp are automatically transferred; planning changes are returned bidirectionally.

Results and benefits

With the S4P solution, Ulmer Maschinenteile GmbH achieves improved capacity utilisation, shorter lead times and higher on-time delivery in the manufacturing of its parts and assemblies. Planning effort was reduced, planning-reliable order confirmations to customers became possible and responsiveness to order changes improved. Seamless integration with ams.erp ensures a consistent data basis without duplicate data entry.
