AI-Based Flor Optimisation through an Autonomous Control Loop (KI-FlORiDA)

Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy

Project Duration: 01.02.2025 – 30.01.2028 | Project Partners: Institute for Textile Technology Augsburg gGmbH, BWF Tec GmbH & Co. KG, Dr. Schenk GmbH Industriemesstechnik, Baumüller Nürnberg GmbH | Funded by: Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy

Objective

KI-FlORiDA develops an AI-based autonomous control system to optimise the production process of nonwoven cards. Through the integration of optical sensors, edge computing and domain-specific physical relationships, a resilient, learning-capable and traceable system is created. The project aims to secure the competitiveness of Bavaria as a production location, with the results being transferable to other industrial machines (e.g. the paper industry).

Results

The system uses an autonomous control loop with real-time monitoring through optical sensors and edge computing. Measured values are linked with physical models, allowing the system to make adjustments independently – without human intervention. This leads to an increase in productivity and quality while simultaneously optimising energy and resource consumption as well as environmental protection.

Industrial Benefit

The production of nonwovens is a highly complex process in which quality deviations, reject rates and downtimes directly affect profitability. KI-FlORiDA addresses these challenges through intelligently automated process control that minimises human intervention while ensuring product consistency at a high level.

The resulting advantages – higher output, lower reject rates, reduced energy and raw material consumption – make the system particularly attractive for operators of nonwoven plants. As the process structures in the paper industry and other areas of textile production are similar, the KI-FlORiDA technology can be transferred to further industrial sectors.

Significance

KI-FlORiDA highlights the core competence of software4production: the fusion of industrial automation, data processing and artificial intelligence in practically applicable shopfloor systems. The project expands S4P's know-how in the field of autonomous control loops, sensor integration and edge computing.

The developed concepts flow directly into the S4P product world – in particular into the area of Order/Batch Management as well as MES solutions with real-time control logic. KI-FlORiDA thus strengthens S4P's position as a provider of AI-based production software and underlines the importance of Bavaria as an innovation location for industrial software.
