Initial situation
The manufacture of medical implants demands the highest requirements for quality and documentation. Production data from the numerous machining centres was to be captured reliably and combined with the SAP ERP system in order to make machine and operating data transparent in real time. The goal was to reduce manual acquisition effort, detect faults early and reliably evaluate the utilisation of manufacturing.
Challenge
The manufacture of medical implants and surgical instruments demands the highest requirements for quality, traceability and process documentation. Machine data from many machining centres was not available in structured form, which made OEE analysis and evaluation of downtimes difficult. The goal was to fully automate machine data acquisition, seamlessly integrate it with SAP ERP and the MES Hydra by MPDV, and meet the strict regulatory requirements of the medical technology industry.
Solution
To optimize its manufacturing processes, Stryker Trauma GmbH relies on a range of innovative solutions from S4P, which serve as a central data integration platform. Only through seamless integration with the ERP system SAP ERP, the MES solution HYDRA by MPDV, Babtec CAQ, and Wintool for tool data management can the automated laser marking cell for implants operate efficiently.
Within this process, SAP routing card barcodes are scanned, material data is collected, and the appropriate labels and robot programs are retrieved from Wintool and managed directly within the cell. Production data is automatically reported to HYDRA by MPDV, while quality data is transferred to Babtec CAQ. Only through the S4P data hub can the stringent requirements for traceability, evaluation, and quality assurance in regulated medical manufacturing be fully met.

Machine utilisation and downtimes are detected early, manual acquisition effort is reduced and process reliability in implant manufacturing is increased – for more efficiency and on-time delivery.
